Part I – A Tribute to Tribal Tattoo
Ray and Suzan in French Polynesia
Recently, I had the privilege of visiting French Polynesia, one of the most beautiful places on our planet. Besides seeking a restful interlude to my normally frenetic life style, I hoped to sample Polynesian Culture by visiting ancient historical sites and recording my observations with my camera. The trip was a huge success. I relaxed, played, visited countless historical sites, and took 2100 digital photographs.
But when it comes to sharing my thoughts about the experience, emptiness comes over me and I know it will be no easy task to communicate the essence of French Polynesia. But why is this? I have plenty of beautiful photographs. I can tell you about everywhere I went with excruciating detail. The problem is that French Polynesia is a study in sensual intoxication. It is more than the temperature of the water, it is the ambient perception that occurs when the water and air temperature are the same. It is the fluffy white sand that stirs beneath your feet in little clouds as you explore magical lagoons protected from the oceans fury by impenetrable walls of coral.
Hibiscus weep with redolent moisture, Moorea Jungle
It is the preponderance of fragrant flowers; behind your ear, around your neck, dotting the roof of your rental car, falling on your head as you traverse the steamy jungle.
Polynesia's future is bright and full of enthusiasm!!!!
Lastly, it is about the Polynesian people, proud and beautiful, sporting tribal tattoos that speak loudly of a rich cultural history. But who are these people, where did they come from and how did this incredible environment shape who they are? They are the essence of French Polynesia. Maybe if I explore their history, my questions will be answered.
I have to add….these four young men on Rangiroa literally RAN out into the shallow lagoon; captured a stingray and brought it back to us to touch. You can’t get that with a MASTERCARD!!!
More to follow, Part II is on its way. Suzan
